The Hidden Power of the Things You Say | Pastor Scott Avey | Week 7

Tame the Tongue — James 3:1–12

Words are small, but their influence is enormous. They can steer the direction of a relationship like a bit guides a horse or a rudder turns a ship. They can encourage courage and healing, or ignite fires that damage marriages, friendships, families, and entire communities. James reminds us that our speech reveals what is happening within us, especially when we praise God with one breath and wound people made in His image with the next.

Because no one can completely tame the tongue through self-improvement, the answer is ongoing surrender. We are called to remember the weight of our words, surrender our mouths to God, and confess quickly when we cause harm. Becoming “quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry” is a daily practice through which God teaches us to speak life, grace, truth, and kindness.
